What is a power door lock actuator and where is it located?

The power door lock actuator is the motorized assembly that unlocks and locks the doors on a vehicle with power door locks. Power door locks allow you to unlock and lock your doors without having to manually do so yourself, making it very easy and convenient. It also provides an additional layer of security to your vehicle. Although most power lock systems operate all the doors at the same time, each door has its own individual actuator. The power door lock actuator is usually found inside the door near the lock mechanism. In some newer vehicles, it is built into the latch instead of being connected remotely by a rod or cable. When the power door lock switch or key fob button is pressed, an electrical current is sent to the door actuators and they change from locked to unlocked (and vice versa).

How do I know if my door lock actuators need to be replaced?

The most common cause of car door lock actuator failure is long term use. Since they are all activated at the same time, they are being used even if that door is not opened or closed. Over time, the electrical contacts inside begin to wear down and not make proper connection. Dirt, grease, and grime can build up on the door actuator and cause it to move slower as well.

If your power door lock actuator is not functioning as it should, you won't be able to lock and unlock your car doors without having to manually do so yourself. Not only does this make entering and exiting your vehicle a little more difficult, but it also makes the valuables and belongings you leave in your car or truck more vulnerable to theft. If your door lock actuator is broken, then it's important to have it replaced as soon as possible in order to restore the convenience that power door locks bring, and avoid the increased threat of burglary.

Can I replace a power door lock actuator myself?

Replacement of the car door lock actuator is about as difficult as replacing a door handle. The inside door panel will need to be removed to get access to the actuator. Electrical connections should just require unclipping and moving out of the way. In most cases, the lock actuator is held in place with screws or bolts, but may use rivets as well. In the case of rivets, the old ones will need to be drilled out and replaced with new nuts and bolts.
