What is a Coolant Level Sensor and where is it Located?

The coolant level sensor measures how much coolant is in your cooling system. There are many variations of coolant level sensors; the simplest versions contain a float that activates a magnetic switch. When the coolant drops below a certain level, the float drops and activates the switch. This causes the low coolant light on your dashboard to come on. Some manufacturers use more complicated sensor designs, but the result is the same: if the coolant drops below its proper level, the warning light comes on. The coolant sensor can be located either on the radiator (toward the top of one of the reservoir tanks) or at the bottom of the expansion tank.

How do I Know if my Coolant Level Sensor Needs to be Replaced?

If your coolant overflow tank is filled to the proper level and the low coolant light remains on, then there is most likely a problem with the coolant level sensor. The float may have become stuck, the magnet of the switch may have fallen off, or the wiring for the sensor may be shorted, corroded, or faulty. Since the switch no longer communicates that it is in the full coolant position, the dashboard light goes on. This does not necessarily pose any danger to you or your engine, but it does require that you vigilantly keep track of your coolant level yourself. In the long run, you’ll save time by simply replacing the sensor. 

Can I Replace a Coolant Level Sensor Myself?

Replacing an engine coolant sensor is not too difficult, but it will take some work. You will want to drain the fluid before removing the coolant level sensor. Be sure to properly dispose of the fluid, since it can be harmful to animals and children. If the coolant level sensor is mounted to the radiator, you may have to remove the coolant overflow tank, washer fluid bottle, or other nearby parts to access the sensor. Then, you’ll simply have to disconnect the wiring for the sensor and pry it off of the radiator. You can, then, reverse these steps to install the new replacement sensor. Be sure to refill the coolant afterwards. Often, if the coolant level sensor is located in the coolant overflow tank, you will have to replace the entire tank if the sensor is faulty.
